Award Winner

Architect Jim Heffner Recipient of Home Builders Care Foundation Community Service Award for 1999
Since June of last year, Home Builders Care Foundation has been deeply involved in a joint effort to get a permanent Men’s Emergency Shelter constructed in Rockville. The undertaking represents a unique partnership with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Jim Heffner of Heffner Architects, PC, in Alexandria, VA, has been a part of the endeavor literally from the ground up. In recognition of his unstinting dedication, the Foundation presented the 1999 Community Service Award to Jim on January 27, 2000 at the MNCBIA general membership dinner meeting held at the Bethesda Marriot Hotel.
The new shelter will house up to 100 homeless men each night, and it is scheduled to be completed by spring. The facility will have beds, toilets and indoor plumbing, laundry facilities, and office space for counseling and referrals that will help the men move toward self-sufficiency. Besides providing a more humane living space, the structure will be a handsome addition to the neighborhood.
Jim Heffner has donated hundreds of hours to the project. In addition to the standard site visits, planning, design, and drawing review, Jim has testified before the Montgomery County Council, addressed a neighboring homeowners’ association, and redrawn the plans more than once to meet the County’s demands. All of this has been done cheerfully and graciously. Many thanks to Jim for his patience, persistence, and for sharing his talent so unselfishly. Congratulations on a superb effort!
