2001 Community Service Award Winner

Home Builders Care Foundation named David Ash of Craftstar Homes the recipient of its 2001 Community Service Award. Dave was recognized for his outstanding work on the shelter in University Park being refurbished by HBCF. The 70-year old red brick house on Route 1 is operated by The ARC of Prince George’s County and is home to four mentally challenged adult males and their live-in counselor.

When asked by Curt Adkins, HBCF Board member and his boss at Craftstar, if he could lend a hand with the project, Dave offered his services without hesitation. Unbeknownst to Curt, Dave and his wife had formed the first parents’ support group at The ARC about twelve years ago. Dave’s own two children have Fragile X Syndrome, which results in mental retardation.

Dave responded to the request for help with typical energy and drive. He operates his own replacement window business, and Dave’s first step was to secure the required 36 windows at a generous discount, a savings to HBCF of nearly $3,500. Not content to stop there, Dave set about recruiting others to lend a hand with the project. On his own initiative, Dave arranged for a trucking company to provide a dumpster at no charge for use in cleaning out the garage, and he also managed to get the dump fee waived. Thanks to Dave, the 8-10 air conditioners needed have been acquired at a tremendous savings: half at no charge, half at cost. Dave also lined up both painting and flooring gratis – hats off to MNCBIA members Ted Hall of Hallco Enterprises and Al Shields of Floors, Inc., for their generosity. On top of this, Dave has coordinated other parts of the job with HBCF Board members Mike Conley (Winchester Homes) and Joe Wilson (Pulte Home Corporation) and with Andrea Kolp at The ARC.

All of this is in addition to the superb job he does at Craftstar Homes. Dave has been Customer Service Manager there for three years and has 30 years’ experience in the field. Craftstar provides a Quality Builder Warranty on the more than 300 homes they build each year, and Dave responds to customers in over 20 closed communities. According to Curt Adkins, Dave is very committed to his job and has his phone on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Curt affirms, “I can always count on Dave to do the right thing by the customer. Thanks to his efforts I get very few phone calls from customers.” Dave Ash has displayed this same dedication and attention to detail to the Home Builders Care Foundation ARC project. He demonstrates in a very real way how Builders Who Share Show That They Care.
