On January 24 in front of 300 MNCBIA members, Brett Egloff, Vice-President in the Construction to Permanent Division of K Bank announced his Run for Shelter - his personal challenge to help raise awareness and money for the HBCF.
For months and weeks following that fateful evening, Brett endured hard training in preparation to run the Frederick Half Marathon. He forced himself to wake before dawn and take to the quiet streets to train. He ran and ran, often questioning himself as to why he put himself in this situation. But he struggled on, keeping his family and friends in tune to his progress and regularly reaching out to potential sponsors for support. He faced his challenge one step at a time.
On May 4, Brett completed his mission by crossing the finish line at a time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 37 seconds in his first ever road race and raising more than $11,000 for Home Builders Care.
When interviewed after the race, Brett commented on his endeavor. “I feel very fortunate to be associated with the Home Builders Care Foundation. The work that they do is vital and completely necessary for our community.
This challenge was one that was very personal to me and symbolic to the home building industry. We are in tough times as we all know. We believe that there is an end in site but we have to get there one painful mile at a time. At certain times, we may want to give up and step off to the side of the road, but we can’t as it’s not in our nature. We are the helpers, the builders and the providers. The miles get harder and the roads tougher to traverse, yet we endure to get to the finish line. As we go through these difficult times we must acknowledge that there are those that are less fortunate than us and without our effort they wouldn’t have a roof over their head or have an opportunity to be a part of our community. We must consider this and be a thoughtful participant as we walk through our daily lives. It would be wonderful if this event were a starting point for many more to get involved and carry on our proud commitment to serve our community and all of those in it. I look forward to the next Run for Shelter and hope you will join in to support this important mission. I’ll see you next year.”
HBCF President Ted Smart commented, “Brett sets the new standard for tenacity in fund raising. Not only did he come up with the Run for Shelter idea, he obtained all the pledges, raised the big bucks and finished the race in good time to boot. We are all very proud his accomplishments and grateful for his generous commitment to run in support of Home Builders Care. It’s an honor to have people like Brett support us and we are delighted in the prospects of making the Run for Shelter an annual affair.”
Thank you to MNCBIA members who pledged Brett's Run for Shelter!
