Rockville Home to Disabled Adults Receives Beautiful New Kitchen

Under the guidance of a team of builders from Ryan Homes, Inc., HBCF recently completed a whole kitchen renovation for a shared home for disabled adults in Rockville, Maryland. The residence, home to five adults with psychiatric disabilities, is owned and operated by Housing Unlimited, Inc. (HUI).

The initial assistance request from HUI asked for only new flooring to be installed in a 10ft. by 12 ft. kitchen area. Upon further inspection by HBCF Board Member Peter Robertson, General Manager at Ryan Homes, the scope of work was greatly expanded to a complete kitchen overall. On Monday, September 24 2007, the entire kitchen was gutted in preparation for the installation of new GE appliances, wood cabinets, Corian countertops, tile flooring and more. The next day, the new flooring was in stalled and the day after, new cabinets. The entire completion of the project, estimated at $20,000, took place in just one week.

“This project has been fantastic,” commented Project Supervisor Chris Starr of Ryan Homes. “The Home Builders Care program provided us with a wonderful opportunity to lend a hand to a great organization.”

“We're very appreciative of the Foundation's support,” said Abe M. Schuchman, Esq., Executive Director of Housing Unlimited, Inc.“The tenants are very excited.

Based in Silver Spring, HUI was incorporated as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) affordable housing corporation in 1991 by parents of adults with mental illness. The goal was to relieve the severe housing crisis for this segment of the population. Today, the mission of Housing Unlimited Inc. is to address the housing crisis for adults with psychiatric disabilities who reside in Montgomery County.

Group Home Recarpeted, Townhome Reconfigured 2000

When Housing Unlimited, Inc. (HUI), asked Home Builders Care Foundation for help with a couple of its properties, HBCF was pleased to oblige. HUI operates an independent living program in Montgomery County for people with mental illness. One of the twelve homes owned by HUI required new carpeting for the living room, dining room, and upstairs hallway. In response to this need, HBCF contributed $1,500 toward the cost of recarpeting in the Silver Spring home.

In addition, Craftstar Homes agreed to do some renovations on two of HUI’s newest acquisitions. Existing master bedrooms in these Rockville townhomes were reconfigured so as to provide an additional bedroom, and a stairway was opened up in each building. Craftstar’s in-kind contribution resulted in a savings for HUI of one-third of the standard cost for the work performed.
