In late 2004, thanks to the efforts of three MNCBIA members, Classic Community Corporation, Craftstar Homes, and Monument Construction - needed improvements were made to two Silver Spring based assisted living residences operated by the Jewish Foundation for Group Homes. The project saved JFGH approximately $20,000 in construction costs.
In-Kind donations were also received from Ray D. Magaha Excavation Inc. and Potomac Disposal, Inc.
The first residence, is home to three men with mild to moderate mental retardation and one with developmental disabilities and mental illness. The home has undergone complete roof and siding replacement, interior wall reconstruction and extensive yard drainage improvements. The home had suffered severe water damage due to intense spring and summer rains.
The second residence is home to three women and two men with diagnoses of mild mental retardation, brain injury, and cerebral palsy with mobility impairment. The home recently received a new, accessible roll-in-handicapped shower and electrical fixture replacements on the lower level. An existing bathtub that leaked water was torn out to make room for the new shower.
In 2006, HBCF undertook a second set of projects for JFGH, which included the renovation of two additional group homes. Under the leadership of Ryan Homes, the projects were completed in September at an estimated value of $60,000.
The first home, located in Silver Spring, serves five men with low moderate/severe mental retardation, autism and seizure disorders. RBS Concrete constructed a new sidewalk at the home to help improve accessibility for residents. The entire interior of the home was also completely repainted by Wayne Drywall. Both companies generously contributed materials and labor at no cost to HBCF. New carpeting was also installed throughout the home. A second home, located in Rockville, serves four male residents and one female, with moderate mental retardation. Masters Plumbing donated time and materials to help correct dryer duct and vent issues. New lower-level exterior windows are also being installed in order to help the facility meet egress code requirements.
The Jewish Foundation for Group Homes (JFGH) was founded in 1982 to enhance the independence and quality of life for adults with disabilities. The organization operates 20 Homes, 3 Alternative Living Units and 39 apartments in Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. In appreciation of our contributions, JFGH presented HBCF with its 2006 Volunteer Service Award during their annual gala meeting.
