In May of 2003, HBCF assisted The Center for Life Enrichment. TCLE, located in Hollywood, MD. The Center is the primary provider of programs and support services for individuals with disabilities in St. Mary's County.
Established in 1961 as a day care program for children with mental retardation, TCLE now services over 130 individuals with developmental disabilities in their facility, providing day habilitation and vocational programs in addition to other support services. The busy non-profit had requested assistance from HBCF for the installation of a new fence and two handicapped accessible walkways to expand and renew their outdoor recreation area. The improvements provide a bigger, safe and secure area for TCLE's clients to more easily participate in various activities and increase their much-desired independence. Improved sidewalks also allow wheelchair bound clients greater access to the area.
"I've received numerous compliments on the quality of work performed. The transformation is remarkable." commented Julie Gasbarre, program coordinator at THCE. "The assistance HBCF has provided will enrich the lives of many for years to come."
A team led by Peter Mohr and Tony Thometz of Hailey Development LC, a land development company, undertook the entire construction project to develop TCLE's recreation area into a more suitable and accessible area for the non-profit organization's clients. "We are extremely grateful to Hailey Development for dutifully stepping forward to support HBCF in this worthwhile project," commented HBCF President David Little."Their active participation in the project is a great example of the local home building industry's willingness to provide valuable in-kind assistance that benefits some of our neediest citizens."
Hailey Development President Rich Thometz, past president of MNCBIA and HBCF board member, was more than happy to have helped. "It's very fulfilling to be able to do good work in the community that allows non-profit organizations to preserve their resources for ongoing social services."
