Home Builders Care Foundation Moves Forward
With Community Projects

Two significant community projects are currently in process under the auspices of the MNCBIA Home Builders Care Foundation, one in Charles County and the other in Montgomery County. The Charles County project is Camp Merrick, an existing summer camp for children who are deaf or hearing impaired, for children with diabetes and for children who are blind. Different programs are offered throughout the summer months, and the children come from states along the East Coast. The Home Builders Care Foundation (HBCF) is installing a ten-foot wide asphalt walk around the perimeter of the camp, and a series of five-foot wide asphalt paths throughout the interior of the Camp, linking different buildings and activity areas. The work will commence in the Fall. Special thanks are due to Bob Heier of Ben Dyer Associates, Inc. , who contributed a significant amount of engineering and survey work; to Mike O’Day of Charles County Asphalt, which is donating the asphalt; Tom Miller of Seven Star Aggregates which is donating the aggregate; and to Bob King of Trans Metro, which is providing on-site labor.

The Montgomery County Project is a Men’s Emergency Shelter to be constructed on Gude Drive in Rockville. HBCF is working in partnership on the project with the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless and the Montgomery County Government with the objective of building a 5,800 square foot emergency shelter which will accommodate 100 beds, bathroom and shower facilities, counseling offices, laundry and kitchen facilities, and storage space.

A major fundraising drive with a goal of $300,000 in cash and in-kind contributions is under way among the MNCBIA membership; specific services have already been provided by Jim Heffner of Heffner Architects PC for the detailed drawings and renderings; David Little of Gutschick, Little & Weber PA for site engineering and Mark Grande of Geo-Technology Associates for soil and site assessment. A detailed list of donors and contributors to date will be included in the MNCBIA mid-September membership mailing.

A brochure designed by Gura & Leigh Associates Advertising about the HBCF is enclosed with this issue of News Update, and members are urged to contact Marianne Benson, Program Manager, if they wish to make a contribution to the Foundation
