In 2007, HomeAid America partnered with the Home Builders Care Foundation to open its 20th chapter in Washington, D.C. HomeAid is a leading national non-profit provider of housing for today's homeless. Most HBCF projects undertaken in the District are nowunder the HomeAid DC brand.
Similar to the in-kind construction program of Home Builders Care, HomeAid's mission is "to build dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives." The addition of HomeAid and its resources allows HBCF to more fully serve the homeless and supportive housing needs of the Washington region and the District specifically.
According to the 2011 results of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments 2011 Homeless Enumeration Report, 11,988 people in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area are homeless, including people who are living on the streets, staying in shelters or living in transitional (or temporary) housing. Of these individuals and persons in families, 6,546 (approximately 55%) are in the District of Columbia.
How HomeAid Works
The HomeAid program works similarly to the Home Builders Care Foundation's charitable construction program. HomeAid acts as bridge between homeless care providers who need new or remodeled housing program facilities and the home building community. Typically, HomeAid is able to help the care provider build or renovate their property - for about half of what it would normally cost.
The Four Steps of HomeAid's Model Housing Development Program
Our HomeAid Washington DC chapter (HomeAid D.C. LLC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of HBCF, Inc. Our chapter recently completed its first HomeAid DC projects - the renovation of the Dunbar Apartments for Open Arms Housing and an energy efficiency retrofit project for Sasha Bruce Youthwork’s REACH program. More projects to come!

Through the formation of HBC Utilities, Home Builders Care has been able to provide residential real estate developers with a new way to support our organization’s efforts. Through this subsidiary, HBCF is able to accept contributions of front foot benefit assessments (FFBAs) for lots that are developed in Maryland. Our objective of this program is to establish an endowment base so that we can sustain the increased efforts of the Home Builders Care program for years to come. An investment with HBC Utilities would help Home Builders Care sustain a source of revenue as a hedge against any future downturns in the industry that would affect our ability to fundraise.
