Our core program is flexible to meet the unique needs of each project
Our typical process for undertaking projects:
- On an ongoing basis, non-profit organizations submit applications for in-kind construction assistance to HBCF.
- Potential projects are reviewed by our project selection committee and the HBCF Board of Directors.
- As required, HBCF is able to provide pre-development technical assistance to help get projects on track, including value engineering, budgeting, obtaining permits, and fulfilling other building requirements.
- As needed, we help agencies seek out additional funding sources and other means of support to help leverage in-kind donations and move the project forward.
- When a shelter-related project is officially adopted, HBCF recruits a Builder Captain and/or Trade Partners to help spearhead the project.
- A construction agreement is put in place outlining the agreed-upon scope of work for each project as well as any funding commitments. Once in place, the HBCF team builds new or renovates the housing facility for the non-profit partner.
- HBCF works with the Builder Captain to secure donated labor, materials and related construction development services from trade partners.
- HBCF provides project management services and administrative support to projects as required, including book-keeping.
- In partnership with agencies, we help promote our joint projects and the volunteer efforts of our Builder Captains and trade partners.
- The HBCF board and staff serves as the liaison between agencies and the building industry throughout the process.
Because every construction project has its own challenges, this model is made to be adaptable.
Building for the Homeless and Others At-Risk in the Maryland-National Capital Community
Home Builders Care Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides cost-effective solutions to other non-profits with shelter-related construction needs.
We collaborate on shelter-related building projects with other community groups using a shared investment approach - all with a common goal to provide shelter and help our neighbors in need achieve stability in their lives. We invest in our non-profit partners’ program efforts via our in-kind contributions of construction services and they in turn invest in the continuation and expansion of social services and programs to help keep vulnerable populations safely housed while improving their quality of life.
Because we have access to the professional resources of the home building industry, HBCF is able to provide our partnering organizations with high quality labor, materials and construction expertise that would otherwise cost them significantly more, both in terms of time spent to seek out and hire professionals as well as money in construction.
With each project, HBCF routinely saves our non-profit partners thousands of dollars in the process, while also extending our own resources to improve their economic well-being by providing them and their clients with a more valuable and useful property.
