Home Builders Care is the Maryland Building Industry Association's (MBIA) official charity and its principal way for BUILDERS to GIVE BACK.
In order to help others in need of shelter and support, the Home Builders Care program depends on you and members of the association – the dedicated builders, suppliers, contractors, and professionals of MBIA – who are willing to step up and help out on projects by sharing their expertise. Our annual Community Service Awards are a way to recognize key individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions through unselfish efforts and dedication to help others in need. Our first Community Builder Award is for a notable project at the Veterans Safe Haven Shelter in Silver Spring. The Safe Haven is a 5-bedroom single-family home, purchased by the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless in 2023, that provides veterans experiencing homelessness with emergency housing. About 40 men are served each year at the site. The shelter needed to become a more comfortable place to recuperate from trauma and begin the path towards stability. Thanks to the amazing team from Toll Brothers’ DC Metro division, led by members of Toll’s Veteran Employee Resource Group and Toll Landscape, a multi-faceted plan was quickly set in motion to
Will Pitts, Toll’s Senior Construction Manager and a US Marine Veteran, & Nick Buchanan, Director of Toll Landscaping, were part of this incredible team who made it all happen. Congratulations to Toll Brothers, a Community Builder Award Winner. Read more on our blog. Our next set of six awards are for one of our largest Marquee Projects in recent years – The Children’s House by the Sea II, a new property for the Believe in Tomorrow Children’s Foundation’s pediatric respite housing program in Ocean City. This total gut-rehab construction project is creating two new townhomes each with an adjacent efficiency to accommodate larger families of critically ill children with short-life expectancies and a traveling nurse or grandparents. By relaxing in a vacation setting, free of charge, families are provided the opportunity to escape from the stressful routine of medical treatments at the beach and create lasting memories together. Home Builders Care got involved in the project back in May 2024. The Believe in Tomorrow team faced a construction budget of over $800K and welcomed any assistance Home Builders Care could provide. The project needed everything. Read our blog post After an initial onsite meeting with the charity and their selected GC – MBIA member Bob Purcell of Beachwood Inc, a custom builder on the Eastern Shore – schedules were shared and a project management team assembled. And for a charity build, the team is also tasked with securing in-kind donations. Two KEY members of this team - Tom Swigart of Stanley Martin Homes and Bobby Thompson of Beazer Homes were instrumental in ensuring that nearly every line item of the project was addressed and supported by suppliers, trade partners and volunteers. The completed House by the Sea II is slated to open to families in June 2025. It is estimated that Home Builders Care involvement cut the project costs in half, largely thanks to the following award winners who were some of the first to deliver in a big way to the project. Our first Community Builder Award is Beazer Homes with Bobby Thompson, Director of Operations and a new HBCF board member. The Beazer team also took on two volunteer days doing demolition work on the early days of the project. Their efforts really kick-started the project! Thank you. -- Our second Community Builder Award goes to Stanley Martin Homes - Tom Swigart, VP for Purchasing and Joe Trubiano, Maryland Division President and an HBCF board member, are here to accept. Just this past week Tom was securing the delivery of all plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware to Ocean City! We are greatly appreciative of all your help. -- Our next set of awards are Tom Sawyer Awards. These winners stepped up providing important hands-on help with big donations and delivery of materials and labor to the Ocean City job site. First up is 84 Lumber, one of our industry’s most generous suppliers. 84 was the very first contributor to the project – helping quickly deliver the first critical load of framing lumber to Ocean City. 84 Lumber also contributed all the building materials for the Shed Building Competition at BuilderMart this past year. Corey Huemmer and Brooke Appler accepted the award. Thank you. -- Our next honoree is Chesapeake Plumbing and Heating. Members of this incredible team are probably onsite today in Ocean City installing the latest plumbing fixtures. In fact, the Chesapeake team has been donating all the plumbing labor for the project. Truly a fantastic contribution. Bruce Harmon accepted the award. Congratulations! -- This next awardee has only been a member of MBIA for less than a year and we are truly honored to have you with us! Current Cabinetry, based in Baltimore, stepped up in a big way by supplying beautiful kitchen and bath cabinetry to all 4 units at the project. Daniel Kurmaier, thanks for your generosity. -- Our final award winner is Delmarva Insulation, a sister company of DeVere Insulation on the Eastern Shore. The company contributed about $40K worth of insulation services to the ocean block home. A huge line item donation. We are so very grateful! Thank you all for your outstanding hands-on charitable efforts that make a difference in the lives of others in need. The cooperation, dedication and spirit of our 2024 Community Service Award Winner is an excellent example of why the Home Builders Care program is successful in helping improve the lives of at-risk individuals and families in our communities. Congratulations and thank you to all our winners! |
