HOME BUILDERS CARE FOUNDATION HONORS THREE (3) FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE
HOGAN, Miles & Stockbridge, and the FCBIA Celebrated for Giving Back to Charity May 11, 2023 (Fulton, Maryland) – Today the Home Builders Care Foundation (HBCF), the official charity of the Maryland Building Industry Association (MBIA), presented its annual Community Service Awards to individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to the community through unselfish efforts and dedication in support of our shelter-related projects. Our Community Builder Award Winner is the team from HOGAN. http://hogancompanies.com The firm practices giving back in the best way they know how: through real estate. Within the past 10 years, HOGAN has taken part in multiple land donation projects across Maryland. Their expertise in real estate allows their donations to be diverse and accessible to industries, from national nonprofits to local growing congregations. In 2022, HOGAN facilitated a land donation to Home Builders Care, the first land donation to our charity in over 30 years. It is one of the largest valued gifts to our Foundation in recent years at close to half a million dollars. The parcel, located on Old Mill Road in Millersville, Anne Arundel County, consists of 1.3 acres of unimproved land with public utility availability and good potential. Zoned R-5 for residential use, the Mews at Millersville, a five-lot subdivision received its final plan approval last July and the lots were donated to Home Builders Care before year end. But it doesn’t end there. Additionally, HOGAN has agreed to help get the subdivision to record plat, which is being processed by the Office of Planning and Zoning. Our Tom Sawyer Award Winner are members of the Frederick County Building Industry Association (FCBIA) https://www.frederickbuilders.org The FCBIA is MBIA’s partner in state advocacy. In late 2022, the team from FCBIA helped solve long-running stormwater drainage problems at the Frederick Rescue Mission, a primary hub for families facing food insecurity in the region. The constant puddles, mud and even dust from the Mission’s gravel parking lot had for years made it treacherous and messy for not only persons in need to get help, but also for Mission staff and volunteers who helped shelter, clothe, counsel and feed the thousands of clients it served in the community. Several times over many years, the Mission looked into having the lot paved, but was told that without expensive stormwater management work, the water would run off the pavement and flood neighboring properties. The Mission just couldn’t make it work until last year, when members of FCBIA rallied to help. Seventeen (17) key organizations were needed to make it happen – from planners and engineers to contractors specializing in pipe, fencing, paving and other professional services. Major contributors included Pleasants Construction, W.F. Delauter, Fox & Associates and Cavalier Development. The Ausherman Family Foundation and Home Builders Care Foundation matched their in-kind contributions to fully fund the project, valued near $450K. A celebratory ribbon cutting took place on January 23 in the middle of the Mission’s new parking lot. Our Directors Award Winner is the law firm of Miles & Stockbridge https://www.mslaw.com Miles & Stockbridge is a leading law firm with seven offices in the mid-Atlantic region. One of the firm’s principles, Casey Cirner, is a member of the Home Builders Care Foundation’s board of directors and serves as Secretary on the Executive Committee. She has been our pro-bono attorney since 2016. Casey practices in the areas of land use, zoning, municipal law, real estate, real estate litigation and appellate litigation. Usually, the pro-bono attorney for Home Builders Care helps out in simple ways, but 2022 brought on a whole other level of needed legal expertise on top of the usual course of business. Not only were construction agreements needed, but also commercial lease agreements and special notices for the Maryland Center for Housing, the formation of new LLCs, the review of land use plans and approvals, title work, and preparation, execution and recordation of closing documents and deeds. All told the firm donated well over 150 hours of prop-bono legal work with an in-kind donation value of nearly $76,000. The cooperation, dedication and spirit of our three 2023 Community Service Award Winners are an excellent example of why the Home Builders Care program is successful in helping improve the lives of at-risk individuals and families in our communities. We are about Builders Giving Back. Congratulations and thank you to all of our winners! |
