Home Builders Care Proudly Displays the Seal of Excellence

For over 10 years, our organization has held this distinguished accreditation in nonprofit management
Picture
In 2011, the Home Builders Care Foundation (HBCF) was first awarded the acclaimed Seal of Excellence for our commitment to practicing and upholding the highest standards of ethics and accountability in the nonprofit sector.

Since then, HBCF has continued its mission of excellence and in both 2016 and 2021, was re-accredited by the
Standards for Excellence Institute®, a national initiative established to promote the highest standards of ethics, effectiveness, and accountability in nonprofit governance, management and operations.

Through this distinguished accreditation program, HBCF routinely and voluntarily opens itself up to scrutiny by a “jury of its peers.”  The Institute's staff and peer review teams examine our organization for compliance with the  Standards for Excellence: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector®.  The code identifies 6 major areas of nonprofit governance and management which contain 27 different topic areas. Each topic area includes specific benchmarks and measures that provide a structured approach to building capacity, accountability, and sustainability in nonprofit organizations.

The Standards for Excellence® are based on fundamental values such as honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, responsibility, and accountability.  Home Builders Care’s programs and services, management, fundraising and financial practices were examined in depth before the certification was awarded.  Home Builders Care is one of the first organizations to be certified under the Standards program that began in 1998. The Standards for Excellence® program was developed by a team of volunteers from Maryland's nonprofit community and was the first effort of its kind in the nation.

Patti B. Kane, Director of Home Builders Care comments, “Routinely submitting to the scrutiny required for certification under the Standards for Excellence isn't always easy, but it continues to be a worthwhile process for us.  This seal shows we have taken every step to ensure we’re serving the community well and operating in an ethical and upright way and we’re proud to promote this accreditation.  HBCF’s work to build for the homeless and others at-risk exemplifies both our dedication to our mission and to meeting the highest standards of ethical practice.  We will continue to strive for excellence.”

Home Builders Care is a tax exempt, charitable nonprofit. Founded in 1984, Home Builders Care provides cost effective construction solutions to other nonprofits with shelter-related project needs. The organization collaborates on its building projects with other community groups using a shared investment approach, all with a common goal to provide quality shelter and supportive services to help neighbors in need achieve stability in their lives.

Home Builders Care leverages the building industry's specialized skills and works collaboratively with a network of existing community groups, such as other nonprofit and governmental agencies, to build for the homeless and other at-risk families and individuals.  As the official charity of the Maryland Building Industry Association, Home Builders Care serves 85% of the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
