The latest project of the Home Builders Care Foundation is helping families working towards stability after a crisis has left them in need of a hand up. We are providing needed improvements at a safe haven home that is part of a special transitional housing program led by a group of congregations in Prince George’s County. A Home Builders Care Turn-Key Project Grant will provide residents with more secure doors and windows, as well as bathroom and kitchen protections so that families are able to focus on their recovery rather than worry about safety issues. A few years ago, nine places of worship came together to form the Bowie Supportive Housing Corporation (BSHC), a program designed to provide stable housing to the working poor. With two houses offering five bedrooms each, BSHC is able to help about four to six families at a time. BSHC member congregations work together to provide counseling, financial and educational assistance and more to help residents transition into independent living during their 12 to 24 months in the program. Home Builders Care is proud to be able to provide help in supporting vulnerable families. Learn more about what our partnering nonprofits say about the Turn-Key Project Grant Program

Generosity has the power to unite and heal communities in good times and bad! And a global threat like COVID-19 touches every person on the planet, and it presents an opportunity to come together as a global community. This #GivingTuesday - Don't forget to support your local charities! New Financial Incentives thanks to the CARES ACTDid you know that the Federal Government's recently passed CARES ACT offers new financial incentives to complement the kindness of your heart?
The first charitable giving tax incentive, for taxpayers who do not itemize their deductions, allows an above-the-line deduction for cash charitable contributions of up to $300. This provision should help to increase donations from individuals who otherwise may not choose to make a charitable contribution. The second charitable giving tax incentive, for itemizers, temporarily increases income limits for cash contributions by individual and corporate donors. Now, individuals can deduct up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) in cash contributions (raised from 60%) and corporations, up to 25% of taxable income (from 10%). Take Time to GIVE if you can and Make a Difference for Home Builders Care - May 5, 2020 Home Builders Care is reviewing a potential project and we are looking for some MBIA members to help! The project involves the renovation of a duplex that houses two families needing affordable, supportive housing, plus the conversion of a detached garage into an accessible accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The property is in Takoma Park and is owned by Coalition Homes, a subsidiary of the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless. The current estimate on the renovation (not including the garage conversion) is $90K.
Right now in the duplex only one unit is occupied by a family. Potential contractors will be allowed in the vacant unit. The family there will probably be moved out once the stay at home order is lifted. Thus it is good planning time for this project! Please contact Patti Kane for more information on how to get involved. During an outbreak in your community, protect yourself and others by:

The first Home Builders Care TurnKey Project of 2020 is complete! Just last week new carpeting was installed at The Bernie House, a local nonprofit that is a part of the solution to those made homeless due to domestic violence in Maryland. The Bernie House provides the non-offending parent and children, who would otherwise be homeless, a genuine family environment while they are still receiving counseling and additional human services to ensure stabilitywhen they transition to permanent housing. The Home Builders Care TurnKey Grant provided all new carpeting in the safe home as the nonprofit prepared to welcome a new family in need of healing and support as they recover from a domestic violence crisis. Special thanks to MBIA member Friends and Family Flooring for stepping up to help with this project and provide quick and quality service during the Bernie House's tight turnover timeframe. As Bernie House stated in its most recent newsletter - Every Small Action Can have a BIG Impact! We are happy to help provide a Fresh Start for the new family.

Can we count on you? Did you know....that last year during the month of December, only 30+ builders contributed to our year-end giving campaign. Where is your commitment? Did you know...that since 2016, the counted homeless in Maryland is up 13%? (source: 2018 HUD annual homeless assessment report) Did you know....that HBCF shelter projects not only help the homeless but also veterans, the disabled, persons suffering from serious illness, and victims of domestic violence? Did you know....that every project we take on is ONLY MADE POSSIBLE with your support? #homebuilderscare #givingtuesday On September 12, MBIA and Home Builders Care hosted a special event to celebrate the benefactors of our industry’s home in Maple Lawn, the Maryland Center for Housing. The Center is a 10,000 sq. ft. two-story office building that was constructed largely in part with in-kind donations of materials and labor, as well as cash donations, from many generous building industry members, led by the late Stewart J. Greenebaum and his company Greenebaum Enterprises. The highlight of the evening was a special dedication ceremony to Mr. Greenebaum, who graciously donated the land for MBIA’s headquarters. It was his goal that other professionals in our industry would visit Maple Lawn and be inspired to build quality communities and leave the world a better place. Stewart J. Greenebaum passed away on December 10, 2017. Michael Greenebaum, Stewart’s son, spoke at the dedication. He acknowledged that he feels the closest to his dad when he drives into Maple Lawn. “It’s just a great honor to have my father’s plaque here with those words. It means so much to me and to his family and also to Mark Bennett, because (Maple Lawn) was the shared vision and every time I come here I think of my father...I couldn’t be prouder. This was really our life’s work creating Maple Lawn. My father always knew this would be a place people would go…it’s become such a showcase… to have the homebuilding industry and to have your building here so all of you can come. Our industry is a great industry and we really set the example, and even when we get sometimes maligned…this shows that we can do great things together….From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you and it means a lot. ” The building project was a true building community effort with 179 industry members contributing to its construction and capital campaign. The groundbreaking for the building took place on November 21, 2011and a grand opening celebration took place on June 18, 2014. It has been valued at $1.8 million. Owned by the Home Builders Care Foundation, and rented to the Maryland Building Industry Association, the mortgage to the building was officially paid off in December 2017.
The Maryland Center for Housing now serves as the headquarters for Maryland’s residential building industry and is home to its advocacy, networking and education activities. We are forever grateful for the generosity and support of our donors who made our home possible. Thank you donors! |
